Founded in 2002 by choreographer Éric Oberdorff, Compagnie Humaine is an interdisciplinary dance company whose artistic practice places the human experience at the centre of creation. Through a distinctive body of work that blends dance, music, theatre, visual arts, film, and immersive technologies, the company explores new ways of telling stories and engaging audiences across disciplines and contexts. Éric Oberdorff was also part of the FEDORA - GENERALI Prize for Opera 2018 Winner, Seven Stones, creative team.
At the heart of Compagnie Humaine’s mission is a commitment to making dance accessible to all and bringing artistic creation beyond traditional stages. The company regularly develops projects in public spaces, schools, prisons, museums, hospitals, companies, and social centres, fostering encounters between artists and diverse communities. This strong engagement reflects its belief in dance as a tool for dialogue, inclusion, and shared humanity.
Compagnie Humaine is recognised for its deeply collaborative approach, particularly in its exploration of the relationship between movement and music. The company frequently brings together dancers, musicians, singers, and performers from different disciplines, creating hybrid works where all artistic elements are in constant interaction. This approach extends to scenography and objects, which are also treated as active components of choreographic composition.
With more than 40 productions created for stage, screen, and alternative spaces, Compagnie Humaine has developed a strong international presence, collaborating with leading institutions such as the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur, and numerous European music ensembles and vocal groups. Its works have been presented widely in France and internationally, often at the intersection of performing arts, opera, and experimental creation.
A key dimension of the company’s practice lies in its engagement with film and digital creation, where choreography is extended into cinematic space. Éric Oberdorff integrates the camera as a choreographic partner, developing hybrid narratives that have been presented and awarded at international film and dance festivals. The company is also actively involved in initiatives such as Nice Dance Film and Mov’in Cannes, contributing to the visibility of dance film as an evolving artistic field.
Through its commitment to social engagement, artistic experimentation, and transdisciplinary creation, Compagnie Humaine continues to expand the boundaries of contemporary performance. We are proud to welcome the company to the FEDORA Network and look forward to supporting its inspiring contribution to the future of performing arts in Europe.
